By applying an alternating voltage to the conductive layers (ITO), an electric field is generated across the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal molecules (dipolar) align parallel to the electric field. When all the molecules are aligned, their optical axes are parallel to the direction of the incident light. In this configuration, light polarized parallel to the optical axis passes through the droplets with minimal scattering and deflection, resulting in transparency.
The polymer matrix not only contains the liquid crystal droplets, but also determines their size and distribution, critical factors for scattering efficiency and final optical quality. Go from transparent to private in an instant with a switch, remote control, smartphone app, or integration with home automation systems (KNX, Crestron, Savant, etc.). Ideal for open-plan offices, meeting rooms, bathrooms, entrance doors, partition walls, and facades. It regulates the intensity of sunlight and reduces glare without completely obscuring the view to the outside (unlike traditional blinds). Improves visual comfort and occupant well-being. The opaque layer diffuses and reflects a significant portion of infrared (IR) solar radiation, reducing summer heat gain and thus the load on air conditioning.
Studies show significant reductions in interior temperatures. The PDLC layer adds an additional barrier, slightly improving the thermal insulation of the glass (lower U-value) in both layers, contributing to winter energy savings. Natural light is maximized without glare, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. Most PDLC films block over 99% of harmful UV-A and UV-B rays, protecting furniture, fabrics, artwork, and skin from fading and damage. It eliminates the need for curtains, blinds, or Venetian blinds, offering clean lines, expansive views when desired, and maximizing the perception of space. It contributes to a contemporary, high-tech aesthetic.
